Europe is so incredibly rich and diverse in cultures and experiences it is not to be overlooked on the way from the USA or UK to South East Asia. It is easy to travel around between countries by coach or rail which makes this continent a backpacker playground. Either take a route across northern Europe through Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, and Prague to the Trans Siberian Railway or stay south for a Mediterranean experience through Paris, Madrid, Rome and Athens.
